By Nathan Boyes as CT Director, I had expected around 20 people to show up to this tournament and was surprised with the 27 who showed, thanks to those who brought extra people with them like Robin Johnson, Mike Gay, and Julie Reis. I was a little disappointed there weren’t more men in the open division considering the guaranteed prize of first and second place getting free entries for singles and doubles at nationals. I decided to join the open division for the first time since several discers have urged me in the last couple months such as Tim Monigan, Brian Baell and Larry Pearce, thanks to them for the little confidence booster. We had at least one participant in every division spreading the field out into interesting groups. The Open group consisted of 5 men, Ricky Cornish, Mike Gay, Robin Johnson, Alan Buchan, and myself. We started at the first hole and it was a tight battle from the get go. We saw a lot of rapid changing in leads and gaps between us. We all agreed Alan had a great power tee shot almost every time but was ice cold in his short game causing him extra strokes every few holes. Ricky parked quite a few on the front nine and put himself out front early. Mike, Robin and I were close together the whole time. We were all missing easy putts all day, some from less than 6 or 7 feet, including back to back for Cornish in the 2nd round. After the first round, Ricky was at minus one, Mike at Even, Robin at plus one, me at plus two and Alan at plus five, all close enough together for anything to happen in the second round. Right off the bat in the first round, Alan, Robin and I caught a disastrous cold in the first three holes. Robin’s cold caught a flu and a fever that would last a bit longer and troubled his shot selection throughout the round. With two holes to go, Mike, Robin and I were within 2 strokes of each other, and on a par 4, 576 foot, hole number 17, disaster struck for me as my first shot went wide left into the trees and so did Robin’s but he came out with an awesome side arm out of the bushes that sent his disc over 225 feet down the fairway to help him clutch his par 4 as I dotted a double bogey. On hole number 18, Mike sent a puny drive 125 feet into the grass, Robin sent a beautiful drive that landed about 10 feet short but rolled another 15 feet down the slope away from the basket, mine landed about 8 feet away. Mike’s second shot hit low hanging branches and shined a light into Robin and mine’s hopes for a tie or 2nd place lead change with birdies. Robin barely missed his birdie and settled for par, I birdied, Mike bogeyed and when the score was tallied, Mike had his 2nd place secured with plus five and Robin and I tied with plus 7. Robin and I decided to do sudden death and leave it all on the course. I won the flip and went first; we pared the first hole easily. The second hole has a big hard long left drive with a dogleg on the left. Robin hit the dogleg tree, went on to get a double bogey as I conservatively got a bogey to get third place. Alan was hot and cold all day and with ice cold putting could not pose as the threat he should have been with his plus 12. |
