This was a very hot and very interesting tournament as 19 participants played at 3 different and very varied courses in Newberg, Oregon. The first course, Champoeg State park, was a flat yet tree filled park, which proved to be a good warm up. The 2nd course was a short but had many elevation changes and Larry Adams Aced the 4th hole at Herbert Hoover. The third course, which no one had ever played at before proved to be the back breaker. The long course with elevation changes proved to be very challenging and nothing like anyone had played before. Scott Pfaff hung on for the win in the Men’s Amateur after Nathan turned an easy par into a disaster triple bogey, and charged hard to make up for it in the last 4 holes. Mike Gay won the Open division by one also, coming from behind to win. Larry Adams, who got second, got a very impressive minus five at Herbert in the second round. Katie Sauer caught the men’s eyes with her consistency and her final score of –21 put her in first place for the women’s division and 5th place out of 13 men amateur players. Whew.
When looking at the scores, yes, Scott Pfaff and Nathan Boyes in the amateur Class happened to have a much better day than the Open Class Mike Gay and Larry Adams. Also this was the first time I have been to a Deaf tournament where two junior players played. Before the tournament started, six women had verbally signed that they were coming. In the end, only two of the six showed up. I was disappointed, but satisfied with the total turnout.
The doubles tournament had an interesting turnout in the end. There were 4 men teams and 1 women’s team. I decided to make it even by giving the women the choice to have one extra stroke per hole, it was their decision to use it when they were driving, approaching or putting. This proved to be a good decision as Scott Pfaff and Nathan Boyes, I, barely pulled away for the win in the last 3 holes of the 20-hole tournament with minus 3. The women’s team kept up the entire time only being 5 strokes behind. Scott Martin and Mike Gay got second with minus one. The other three teams including the women’s team tied for third place at plus two. Since there was a prize for 3rd place, there had to be a sudden death playoff. I created a new hole that would be much more difficult and would create a true 3rd place team. I said that all rules from the doubles tournament would carry over. During the sudden death, the women’s team opted to use their extra shot and one of the men’s team complained. Apparently I was supposed to go over the details again than to simply say the rules carried over. Through two tough sudden death holes, the women’s team came out as the victors of the 3rd place spot with two straight pars. The women were Katie Sauer and Tracey Tasselli.
